Dentures

A denture is a removable replacement for missing or extracted teeth and surrounding tissues to restore the appearance and oral functions that were lost.

Dentures can either be complete or partial, meaning they can either replace all teeth or just a few that are missing. They are custom-designed to fit your mouth.

Why would someone need to use a Denture?

There are many reasons for getting dentures, including:

  • Loss of natural teeth due to gum disease, tooth decay, injury, or infection.

  • Difficulty when eating certain types of foods (especially hard or chewy).

  • You hide your smile because you have one or more missing teeth.

Benefits of using a Denture

By using a denture, you will:

  • Avoid facial sagging.

  • Eat and speak correctly without difficulty.

  • Restore your smile and boost your self-confidence.

  • Protect your remaining natural teeth from excess wear of shifting.

 Types of Dentures

The main types of dentures are:

  • Partial dentures. They are used when a patient still has teeth left, but those teeth aren’t strong enough to support structures such as dental bridges. They can easily be taken out for cleaning and while sleeping. Partial dentures can be made of acrylic, metal, or plastic.

  • Complete dentures. Also known as full dentures, they replace all of your natural teeth. Complete dentures are held in place by suction and/or the help of an oral adhesive.

  • Immediate dentures. They are for immediate use after tooth extraction and during the healing process of different treatments. This type of denture can be easily adjusted, and it’s usually disposed of when the healing process is completed and the mouth is ready for a permanent denture.

How long will it take to get used to wearing a Denture?

Adjusting to your new denture can take time as your facial muscles adapt to changes in your mouth: your biting ability may feel different, and the position of your tongue, lips, and cheeks will be altered. Fortunately, with the course of a few weeks, your mouth will get accustomed to wearing it. Usually, dental wearers start beginning to feel more “normal” after about 30 days; during this time, you can expect to:

  • Have some soreness.

  • Feel discomfort or awkwardness.

  • Experience an increased saliva flow.

  • The sensation that your dentures are loose or too big.

A denture is a foreign object in your mouth, so be patient. You’ll need some time to practice and get used to it.

Should Dentures be worn at night?

No. Dentures should be removed at night before you go to sleep. Taking your denture out:

  • Allows the gum tissue to rest.

  • Allows natural stimulation and cleansing by the tongue and saliva.

  • Reduces the likelihood of gum or oral yeast infections.

After removing your denture, you must store it in water or a solution made for this purpose, so it can soak and get cleaned overnight. These good habits will help extend the life and fit of your denture.

How long do Dentures usually last?

Dentures usually last between 5 and 7 years. Just like natural teeth, dentures wear down and stain with age, meaning your dentist will need to remake or partially reconstruct them to fit appropriately according to your mouth’s changing shape throughout the years.
